Couple of days in Athens

by Spootnic » Tue Jul 19, 2005 6:58 pm

I am doing a business trip to Athens and would like to know if I can take some day/tours both in Athens and in the surroundings areas. I wouldn?t want to miss the good parts.

Hello. Some taxi drivers would make the tours. Its confortable and do not costs much considered to other European towns. There are also many travel agencies in Athens that will propose all the possibilities in Athens and in the surroundings.

The taxi suggestion is good. If you do a Google search on 'taxi tour athens', you'll get a number of hits to research. Some of these taxi hosts are quite professional and they take pride in showing their city. The travel agencies and most hotels all offer day tours of Athens and surrounding areas (Sounion, Delphi, etc) by bus, but you won't find anything very personalized. If you're by yourself, however, you may like the convenience of being with a group.

couple of days in Athens

When we were in Athens we didn't take any day trips or tours, we just bought a book about Athens and then explored on our own - mostly around the Plake and the Acropolis. We really enjoyed this. We took some tours on some of the Greek islands and found them very busy and rushed and didn't give us much time to look around on our own - but the tour guides did give us lots of good information.

We went to the Acropolis on a Sunday and found out that on Sundays the admission fee is free. So that was a bonus but of course it was really really busy that day. (you may want to confirm that Sundays are still free?)

Our favorite part of our stay in Athens was taking in an outdoor concert at the theatre by the Acropolis (sorry I can't remember the name of it right now - but once you are walking around the acropolis you can't miss it. It might be called Odeion of Herodes Atticus - but I could be wrong). The theatre is an original outdoor theatre that has been reconstructed. The accoustics and view are amazing!

Be very careful if you use the taxi idea........ work out the price beforehand....... It has been known for Athens taxi drivers to "Skin their fares alive"

While there are certainly Athens taxi drivers that take advantage of tourists, if you use a reputable taxi tour-host that specializes you shouldn't have any trouble. There are a couple that advertise on the net and they always post the total tour prices. Take a look at their websites and read the customer comments.
