Vikos village Zagoria: Vikos is a small popular village, 51 km far from Ioannina.
This village provides a magnificent view of the Vikos gorge; it has obviously taken its name after the gorge, which is part of the Vikos-Aoos National Park. Vikos is a common starting point for walks along the gorge and has many footpaths leading to great places, such as the downhill springs of the Voidomatis River, at 20 minutes distance on foot. These footsteps also lead to the church of Panagia Spiliotissa (Virgin Mary of the Cave).
There is another good view point to Voidomatis River, on the opposite side of the gorge. There are many comfortable pensions in Vikos which are useful if you want to make the inverse itinerary and reach Vikos at night.To get to Vikos from Ioannina, you can use the local bus service. Just take into account that the itineraries are rare, only three times a week, and usually part from Ioannina early in the morning. It is advised to check the schedules before planning the trip.
