Zagoria Villages: Ano Pedina village in Zagoria
Ano Pedina village Zagoria: The village of Ano Pedina is found in Central Zagoria, at an altitude of 960m above sea level and at just 35 km from Ioannina. Ano Pedina is built in the zagorian architectural style, with stone-built houses and streets from the 18th and 19th centuries.
The monastery of Evangelistria, at the entrance of the village, dates back from 1786. It has great wall paintings and valuable heirlooms, such as holy books and icons. The monastery celebrates on March 25th and a big festival in the square of Ano Pedina takes place. If you walk 1 km from the village, on the path to Monodendri, you will find the inhabited Monastery of Agia Paraskevi, built in 1750 and hosting some nice wall paintings. Moreover, in the centre of the village, you will find the church of Agios Dimitrios, built in 1793, with a wood carven iconostasis.

Ano Pedina also hosts an old stone-built school with the library of Neofytos Doukas, characterized by its rare manuscripts. Another interesting place to visit is “Kaliotripa”, a bottomless well, found at the southeast edge of the village. Throw a stone in this edge and you will see that it won’t reach a bottom. Kaliotripa was built by the erosion of the mountain from water. It may be difficult to find the path on your own, but the locals will certainly help you.
