Zagoria Geography
Information about the geography of Zagoria, Greece

Zagoria is a mountain region on the north western side of Greece and it belongs to the prefecture of Ioannina. Surrounded by huge mountains, the geography of Zagoria is very barren, covering the space between Ioannina on the south, Mount Mitsikeli on the south west, Mount Tymfi and river Aoos on the north and Mount Mavrovouni on the south east. There are 46 villages of special architecture, long history and great natural beauty in Zagoria.

It has two natural parks, one is the Vikos-Aoos Natural Reserve and the other is the Valia Calda Park, close to Mount Tymfi. These parks have wonderful flora and fauna and provide amazing trekking paths. Also extreme sports can be practiced in River Voidomatis that runs Zagoria, such as rafting, canoe kayak and river trekking. An impressive geological site in Zagoria is Vikos Gorge, the second deepest gorge in the world after Grand Canyon.

Most popular villages in Zagoria include Papigo, Monodendri, Vitsa and Aristi. These villages are snow-covered in most part of the winter and cold is heavy there. Ioannina or Konitsa can also be used as bases for excursions in Zagoria.
