Zagoria Excursions, Greece: Information about the excursions in Zagoria

The area of Zagoria includes ideal locations for excursions, which can be planned in different orders. Taking this into account, the following information will present the most remarkable places and some ways of combining the visits to them. Many visitors choose the village of Tsepelovo in the central area as their first destination. Tsepelovo is the biggest village and it is a great choice, as it is very picturesque and has an awesome church with greatly restored frescoes. Its monastery nearby is also worth to visit. It is also possible to see one of the stone bridges scattered along the area, apart from many mansions of important families.

Tsepelovo is at 1050 metres height and from that point it is possible to go along an uphill path to Vradeto, the highest village -at 1450m height. To get there, you can follow a nice path at the edge of the Vikos gorge. This path leads to the great area of Beloi and there you can enjoy the imposing view, especially the view to the gorge.

The Voidomatis River flows across and the whole area has a stunning natural beauty. A walk to this river can also be planned, although it is important to take enough fresh water supplies and wear good and comfortable shoes, a hat, and preferably long trousers -just to avoid possible snake bites. After Vradeto and Beloi, it is possible to continue the excursion downhill and visit the village Kapesovo. This path used to be the sole connection between the village of Vradeto and the rest of the area until recent times.

Another option might be to start from Tsepelovo and go down to where the Vikos gorge starts. This point is marked by a stone bridge dating from the late 10th century, known as ‘Paliojefira’. Then, the road continues through a beech and pine-tree forest, after which you find the village of Kipi. This village has a folk museum and, from there, it is possible to walk up the ‘Koukouli’ steps and visit its centre.

On the other hand, there is another interesting route that can be followed from the Vikos gorge. You can follow the cobbled trails along its floor, which lead to a 10th century stone bridge. After crossing it, it is possible to reach the village of Vitsa. The village of Mononderi, also built on the edge of the gorge, is another great location.

At North, there is an old up-hill path to follow and reach the village of Papigo. This village is divided into two sections. Megalo Papingo can be reached if you cross the bridge of the Voidomatis River and follow the road up. In case you go 3 km further, you find Mikro Papigo. There are also many alpine footpaths leading to places like Kokino Lithari, Voidomatis River springs, Drakolimni and others.

These are some of the main options when it comes to the available excursions along Zagoria. Plan a good schedule and enjoy them all during your vacation trip!
