and central group of villages. Ano Pedina located at the western side is a traditional settlement with well-preserved houses and mansions, built close to a graphic mountain. It flourished in the middle of 19th century due to the construction of the school. There are many interesting monuments in the village like the Monastery of Evagelistria that dates back to 18th century.
The western side of Zagoria Greece includes also the popular villages Megalo and Mikro Papigo, Aristi, Vikos, Agios Minas and Mesovouni that surround the valley of Voidomatis River. Voidomatis itself is one of the most beautiful rivers in Greece, the ideal setting for hiking and rafting. The mountainsides are dotted with charming stone bridges. Asprageloi is a village in the central Zagoria built amphitheatrically in an altitude of 1,000 meters.
In the central Zagoria, there are also the villages of Vitsa and Monodendri, from where paths start and lead to Vikos Gorge, the second deepest gorge in the world, after the Grand Canyon, USA.
All the traditional settlements in Zagoria Greece have preserved their unique quality and character from the past times. Some of the houses are just as fascinating as the churches and the monasteries in the area with wooden carvings and lovely paintings on the walls.
Zagoria Greece is literally a paradise for hikers. There are several mountain trails which reveal the existence of colorful flowers, running waters and little ponds reflecting this breathtaking mountain landscape. |
