Parga Architecture

Parga is a beautiful seaside town opposite the exquisite Greek islands of Paxi and Antipaxi. The area is blessed with a unique natural beauty located between the Ionian shores and the foothills of Parga Greece. During the medieval times and until the 17th century, Parga was constantly attacked by many invaders and pirates and as a result, this period left many traces like the Venetian Castle among other fortifications. It is an impressive medieval construction with high walls, inscriptions, emblems and secret paths that lead to the sea. From there, you can have a wonderful view of the town and its bay.

Venetians brought economic prosperity to Parga with the construction of many buildings and olive presses. The houses are typically Venetian, which means that they are small in size, white-colored and there is little space between one house and the other. Most of them have also two or three storeys, wooden balconies, and tiled roofs.

This type of defensive architecture protected the locals from the attacks and definitely highlighted the picturesque setting of the town. Following the liberation, the architecture of Parga lost its austere character and houses were built in a different style. However, the emblematic features of Parga, the churches, the elegant mansions, and the castles compose the magical scenery of this town. Another impressive castle in the region is the Castle of Anthoussa, about 5 km from Parga main town.

Visitors can enjoy their stay in many of the traditional hotels that have respected the traditional architecture.
