Thassos Geography

Thassos is part of the Eastern Aegean islands and it is actually the northernmost island of the group. Thassos island has volcanic soil and mountainous landscape, its highest pick rising at an altitude of 1,142 meters. The island is close to the Greek mainland, only 10 km from Keramoti Kavala, which is why the history of Thassos is strongly connected to the history of northern Greece. Thassos has a total area of about 400 sq km, a length of 24 km and a width of about 20 km. Its shape is almost circular.

Thassos has a population of about 18,000 inhabitants, most of whom are mostly concentrated in the capital. The mountains of the island used to be covered with pine, planes and chestnut trees. Olives, tobacco, and vineyards are largely cultivated on the island. These activities, along with quarrying, fishing, beekeeping, and tourism, constitute the main sources of income for the inhabitants of Thassos.

The geography of Thassos is featured in its amazing coasts and beautiful mountains. The soil of Thassos is rich in minerals, like gold and marble. Oil has been discovered in the sea near Thassos in the 1980s and oil derricks have been scattered. Along with tourism and fishing, mining is the main source of income for the inhabitants.
