The Church of Maries

This church is located in the village Maries, south-eastern of Limenas. It is dedicated to the archangels and is one of the oldest churches of Thassos.

Superb handmade decorations made by the monks adorn the church. Also worth visiting in Maries is the Monastery of Panagoudas.


The Church Agios Athanassios
Agii Apostoli Church

It was built in 1845 and is directly linked to the social and economical life of the village which got its name from this church.

The first church of Panagia was built during the 18th century, when the village was founded;
The Church of Agios Charalambos

This church is located in the village of Panagia, a few kilometres south of Limenas. It was built in 1820 and it is honouring Saint Charalambos.


The Church of Agios Ioannis Theologou

This church is dedicated to Saint John the Theologian. It was built in 1825 and is situated in the villageof Panagia.
 
The church of Saint Athanassios is enclosed within the walls of the Genoese Castle (Kastro), a traditional settlement located in the central part of Thassos, near the village of Maries.

According to an inscription on the wall, this church is dated to January 1804.

The stones used for the construction of the church have been taken from the ruins of an old castle.

It is a three-aisled basilica with a wooden roof and an arched arcade; it is a typical example of the local ecclesiastic architecture.

On the 18th of January, the church celebrates the feast of Saint Athanassios and welcomes many pilgrims from all over the island, who come to eat together on the huge table of the church.


The Monastery of Archangelos Michail

This monastery is dedicated to the Archangel Michel and is located on the road between Astris and Alyki, on a cliff.

It is worth-seeing for its breathtaking location and for the construction itself.

The Agios Ioannis Antzoussis church

Situated 3 kilometres west of Thassos Town, this church is the oldest church of the island.

The Church of Panagia

This church is dedicated to the Virgin Mary (Panagia in Greek) and is located in the village of the same name.
but with the increasing of the population of the village around 1780, the need for a bigger church started to flourish.

The construction of the actual church started in 1831; because the funds were not sufficient tocomplete the church, the inhabitants of the village asked
the economical help of Agion Oros.

The church is a basilica with a high and octagonal dome, with three aisles with semi circular domes.

The temple is wood carved, decorated by craftsmen from Volos and has five entrances.

The church possesses architectural characteristics of the Byzantine churches of Kastoria (mainland Greece).

Its walls are built with marble slabs coming from the ruins of ancient temples.

An icon dating from 1814 and representing the Virgin Mary can be seen in the church.

The Monastery of Ipsilou

This Byzantine monastery stands 9 kilometres south-west of the village of Andissa, north-west of Mytilene.

The monastery was founded before 800 AD in honour of Saint John the Theologian.

It houses various ecclesiastical items such as stoles embroidered with gold, altar-clothes, gospel’s covers, valuable crosses and a great number of important documents.
The Chapel of Agios Athanassios

This chapel stands in the village of Panagia.

It is dedicated to Saint Athanassios and was built in 1818.
The Basilicas at Alyki

These ruined basilicas were built during the 5th century and it is believed that they were abandoned during the 7th century.

They use to have three aisles which were separated by Ionian columns and decorated with representations of animals.

The Assumption Church

This church was built in the 19th century on the edge of the village of Rahoni, and is surrounded by sycamores and ground water.

The church celebrates the Assumption of the 15th of August.

The Church of Agios Nikolaos

This old church is dedicated to Saint Nicolas and has been built in 835, on the ruins of ancient temples.

Limenas Agios Nikolaos


It is standing in the capital of the island, the town of Limenas and is one of the oldest churches of Thassos.

Vatopediou Monastery

This monastery is two-storied and is the trademark of Limenas, the capital of Thassos.

It is standing in the middle of the dock and was built during the 19th century.

This monastery is also called Kalogeriko (of the monks).

Hundreds of other churches, chapels and monasteries are scattered around the island, waiting to be discovered.
