The Ancient Remains of Aliki village on ThassosAncient Remains of Thassos: Thassos, also known as the “Emerald of the Aegean” is a beautiful island full of traditional villages hidden in the mountains, lush vegetation and long, sandy beaches, with crystal clear waters. However Thassos has much more to offer than breathtaking natural beauty. The island is a treasure of ancient sights and ruins that include temples, old churches and dozens of scattered sanctuaries that make Thassos not only among the most beautiful but also among the most important must see travel destinations in Greece.

Aliki
Aliki is among one of the most beautiful villages of the island. To the right end of the village you will see the ruins of an ancient temple dating back to the 7th Century B.C. On taking the narrow path from there you will come upon two early Christian basilicas that were built on the foundations of ancient temples. Continuing west from there you will eventually hit upon the site of ancient marble quarries.

The Ancient Temple of Athena on Thassos Sanctuary of Athena:
All that remains of this sanctuary that was once dedicated to
the goddess Athena is a row of foundations.
Sanctuary of Pan:
This is a manmade cave located near the summit of the largest hill.

Phillipi
Located about 20 minutes from Kavala, Phillipi was Saint Paul’s first stop in Europe. The ancient theatre and the ruins of the ancient town are a must visit.

Cape Pirgos
Located to the north east of the island, here you will come across the remains of an ancient lighthouse and a memorial by Akeratos. Going further south you will find the ruins of the ancient city of Koinyra.

Limenas

Used to be the ancient capital of the island, and now the village has regained the same title. The village is the richest source of ancient relics and remains in Thassos. Here you will see ruins of ancient temples, the ancient theatre, the defensive walls, the acropolis, the Vriokastro area, the ancient agora and much much more.

The Ancient Market of Limenas village on Thassos Ancient Agora (Ancient Market): The ruins of the ancient agora were found between the years
1948 and 1955 to the northeast of the town of Thassos near the harbor, next to the museum. The agora was a huge rectangular area that was lined on three sides with shops and storerooms. There was a court flanked by colonnades in the middle of the ancient agora that was decorated with statues and altars. On the north eastern side were located the administrative and cult buildings.

The agora was the commercial and cultural centre of the city where locals and foreigners met for business transactions and leisure. To the north of the agora you will see the ruins of the ancient temple of Dionysus that dates back to the 4th Century B. C. You will also come across the Poseidonio, a sanctuary dedicated to Poseidon with a circular wall surrounding a U-shaped altar. The present day entrance to agora is in the museum square.

Harbors
Thassos had two harbors back in the day. The present day harbor served as the ancient city’s military harbor. It was protected by two fortified towers and a marble wall. The other one that is located near Eurokastro was used for commercial purposes. Both harbors were located outside the city wall for security reasons.

The Ancient Remains of Aliki village on ThassosVriokastro: This area is located uphill from the harbour. Here you will see the sanctuary of the Saints Apostles. At the top of the hill you will see the ancient theatre. You will also see the sanctuaries of Apollo, Athena and Pan. Walking down the path you will come across ancient walls and stone doorways eventually hitting upon the sanctuary of Hercules.

Ancient theatre
What you will first notice about the theater is the panoramic view of the sea that is offered. Built in the 3rd Century B.C. the theater could easily accommodate 2000-3000 spectators. It was altered by the Romans in the 1st Century A.D and was used for gladiatorial contests. The theatre continues to be used today for musical performances as well as those of ancient tragedies in the summer.

The Ancient Acropolis of ThassosAcropolis and the Sanctuary of Athena
Walking up from the ancient theatre you will eventually reach the acropolis. Located about 137m above sea level, it was protected by marble walls and was also the site of the sanctuary of Apollo. The sanctuary served as the treasury where the city’s riches were stored and as the residence of Hieromnemon a functionary responsible for managing and safeguarding public wealth.

Gate of Silenus

The Gate of Silenus is located outside the town of Thassos at the junction of the roads that lead to the village of Panagia and the beach of Mikriammos. The gate is two meters tall and depicts Parmenonand Silenus with a thick beard and a horse’s tail naked except for a pair of high boots. The Silenus settlement was found near the gate and people who passed the city placed offerings at his feet.
