In September 2011 I found this wonderful island. An ideal place for rest, beach and swimming.
I was staying at the guesthouse summer dreams, whose hosts are very nice and helpful. The guesthouse is tastefully arranged, it is very clean and located in a quiet area.
Not to be missed beaches that stretch the entire circumference of the island, some inhabited, others wild and lonely.

We started from Serbia, half past 4h in the morning. In the afternoon we reached Keramoti and caught a ferry to Thassos. The appartment we rented was situated in the old town of Limenas, near the Archeological museum. Limenas was a rather big town in antiquity, bigger than today. That I concluded when visiting the gates of the ancient town, which are beyond today's town perimeter.
The ancient town of Thassos is very interesting. There are a lot of archeological remains, city walls, gates, agora, churches and temples, and above all an ancient theatre. There is an acropolis with the remains of a Bizantine-Genoese-Otoman citadel, too. We had plenty of time for sightseeing.

Today's Limenas is a nice little town. With narrow streets, the one called Megalo Aleksandrou (Alexander the Great) is not wider than few meters, shops, cafes, tavernas, restaurants and a nice waterfront, it is very pleasant for the evening walks and shopping.
After a day's rest, bathing at the town beach, which is quite allright, we started exploring the beaches of the island.

First, we ventured to Alki, the best beach on Thassos, in my humble opinion. It is situated in the east coast, as the other nice and famous beach, Paradise. Aliki is situated in a small bay, with a peninsula nearby, secluded with pines, where one can wonder and discover ruins of ancient temples, basilicas, Roman sarcofag and an ancient marble quarry.

Next, we went on a round trip around island by our car. We visited a monastery on the south-east, drove through a village of Potos, took a bath at the beautiful beach of Psili Amos, and reached Limenaria, a small town on the south coast. After a pleasant walk around town, and lunch in a local taverna, we came by Iris Gold, a jewelery factory. It is worth a visit, though the approach road is very steep, and we bought few items as well. In the afternoon, after a swim on Tripiti beach, we drove back to Limenas by the west coast.

Next few days we visited Paradise Beach in the east, and beaches on the north-west, just outside Limenas, Nisteri and Pachis. One cloudy afternoon, we went to Panagia, a traditional village in the hills, with the spring of love and old olive oil factory. After ten days spent on this lovely island, we caught first morning ferry for Keramoti at 6h, and after a day's drive, reached our home town 7h in the evening.

We started 5 o'clock in the morning from Kikinda, Serbia. After a day long trip by car, at 8h local time we reached Limenas. We unpacked and settled in a pre reserved appartment in villa Ruhla. We had a 3 bed appartment. We were very satisfied with the accomodation especially its location. It was in the center of town near the national museum.

Thassos is very nice place for real restfull and relaxing vacation. It is not too much turustic like Mykonos of Santorini, but it is still cosmopolitan. There are a lot of nice beaches, and places to visit and a lot of places of historical interest. We were there in the beginning of july 2010, but though it was summer the weather was not very good.We had few rainy mornings and evenings and a whole rainy day. But there is a lot to see even if one can't go to the beach. Limenas is situated on place of ancient town, that was bigger than it is nowdays. It could be seen by the remaining ancient city walls and gates. There are ruins everywhere. Also there is a very nice museum.

We visited a lot of nice beaches but we prefered Aliki the most. It is situated in a small bay edged vith pines. There is also a peninsula with archeological sight shadowed by pine wood. There, one could see an ancient querry, too. We liked Paradise, Psiliamos, Tripiti, Nisteri and Pachis beach, too. The town of Limenas is pleasant place, not very big, but big enough. There is quite enough shops, taverns and restaurants, but no real night life.

We visited a small town named Limenaria too. It is nice, an ex mining town, now mostly touristic. There is a factory of juelery nearby. Also ve visited a mountain village of Panagia, very nice place with old houses and an old olive oil factory. Alltogether I can recommend Thassos for a good and relaxing holiday, but if you want to party every night, go to Mykonos.

Absolutely in love

It was my first visit to Thassos, and I fell absolutely in love with the island. The best thing about the island is its small size, so much so, it was possible to tour most of the island within our week-long stay there. The beaches are the highpoints- lo stretches set against pine-cloaked hills and sprinkled with breathtakingly beautiful secluded coves off the beaten track. Hired a car and explored the island and its beautiful coastal beaches.

Alyki, Paradise and, of course, the Golden Beach are among the popular ones, but I followed some of the makeshift signs to beaches that are not on the tourist maps, and it turned out to be the best part of the holiday. Had the beach all to ourselves and caught up on some great snorkeling. If you are tempted to follow suit, remember to carry your essentials-there is not a tavern in sight for miles.

The food and drink on Thassos is excellent- superb value for money, although I can't figure out why they have to dish out fried chips with every meal. The food, especially seafood, was tasty wherever we dined, and they really didn't have to pep it up with fries. Try some rice or vegetables, instead of potatoes.

We discovered Thassos a few years ago and we keep on going back to enjoy the lovely landscape and to clear our heads from the madness of the city.

The island is for nature lovers! Don't expect the masses of trendy people and 5 star luxury hotels. In many villages, life is as it used to be in the Med many decades ago. If you can appreciate the natural beauty of a place and its hospitable people, then this is the place for you.

I would say that Thassos is a rather bohemian island. We actually found out that there are a lot of artists staying in the mountain villages. The beaches are stunning and among the cleanest in the Mediterranean. The colour of the water is like in the Caribbean! The mountains are also incredible. You can wonder among pine forests, fresh water springs with the air smelling of wild oregano and thyme.

Paradise beach and Alyki are the top beaches for me but there are also hundreds of little coves you can find just by exploring around a bit. In terms of mountain villages, I think Kazaviti (aka Megalos Prinos) is the gem of the island. Don't miss its main square for lunch or dinner with a view of the beautiful village mansions built according to the old Macedonian architectural style. Top vistas from there and from Theologos.

The food is also excellent and very good value for money in comparison to other Greek islands. We tried delicious meze and seafood specialities at Skala Kallirahis (on the beach) and at Mouses in Limenas. Also Klimataria tavern on the way to Paradise beach has great food. We drove all the way to St Panteleimon monastery on the top of the mountain and it was well worth the effort. I am sure trekking to the monastery must be an unforgettable experience, too.

Finally, we bought some honey and olive oil from the Co-op on the way to Prinos and they are top quality. They told us the olive groves in Thassos are hundreds of years old and the microclimate helps them to produce a very delicate oil. They were so right! We are big time converts to the local produce.

We just cannot wait to go back to that lovely dot on the map!

I stayed a week at the Golden Beach Thassos and the weather was simply superb. We did have a thunderstorm one evening, but the sky cleared up completely next morning. A perfect place to chill out. Thassosis completely unspoilt and what I liked most about the island was its green patches unlike some Cyclades islands I had visited. Olive groves and pine forests spread along the beachside makes the place really scenic.

Apart from the Golden Beach, I also visited Makryammos, Limenaria, Paradise and Alyki, breathtakingly beautiful beaches and I was pleasantly surprised to see that there were not too many visitors around. A couple of them even had a few deserted coves far from the beaten path. Supermarkets in Thassos have all goods. I cooked my own dinner on most days, and the beer and wine at the supermarket were incredibly cheap compared to taverns. The hillside villages of Panagia and Potamia are a must see. It is just above the Golden Beach, and if you are game for trekking then nothing like it.

In fact, I strongly recommend a trek to actually experience the beauty of the place. The countryside is absolutely stunning with wooded hillsides and valleys that are surprising lush even in high summer. And don't miss the great food at the taverns that are clustered around a fountain in the centre of Panagia. The fountain gushes water from the springs that originate from the nearby forests and is absolutely safe to drink.

The island is really nice, not what you might think of when you imagine a Greek island. The sea is there, the olive trees are there, the small coves and secluded bays are there, the ruins teaming with millenia of history are there, the nice Greek food is there, but not the scorching sun, the baren landscape, the five stars hotels, the white flat roofed buildings. It's a very very nice place for those who want the Greek island experience without the heat and the masses of tourists- at least at the ends of the season.

The beaches (all beaches) in Thassos are fantastic. I mostly loved Paradise beach and the small beach next to Potos where the hotel Atrium is. Theologos and Prinos are nice villages. You can sit for hours and watch the sunset from every spot of Thassos. Food is fantastic, try Thassian restaurant in Limenas. I was only a bit irritated that the English breakfast was so much advertised everywhere on Thassos. You go to a foreign country to taste something different, to eat the way locals eat and live like they live. If you want English breakfast, you go to England. Do not fall in the trap to give people what they are used to. We come to Greece to experience the Greek way. Just give us that and we are happy.

Develop more tourist facilities

We just returned from our trip to Thassos, where we stayed at a nice boutique hotel in Limenas. The blend of traditional and modern atmosphere is noticeable in this village. It is regarded as the commercial and administrative centre of the island. The interesting feature of this village is that it is divided into two sections. The old part is extremely touristy for the ancient ruins and historical sites, whereas the new part is filled with modern touristy facilities like hotels, nightclubs, shops and restaurants so that tourists can have a good time here. Our hotel staff provided us with a brochure that included all the interesting places that we can visit on this island. We hired a car for a couple of days and visited Theologos and the beautiful southern coast.

Along the way, you could see so many gorgeous beaches. The inland of Thassoswas so great for trekking. I wish there were plenty of signed trekking paths and that these activities were more organized. It is a pity that such a beautiful island is not appropriately developed. It seems to me that the Greek islands base their economy exclusively on tourism, so wouldn't it be better to emphasize more on that?

Thassos is a remarkable holiday getaway amidst the Greek islands. I just happened to come across it over the internet while planning for a summer vacation last year. Thassosis a great vacation spot for families with children. The beaches are safe (although a bit stony!!) and beautiful, everywhere there is a vast expanse of greenery even on the mountains. We stayed at a hotel in the tourist village of Limenaria. The beach was very clean and my kids loved the water sports. The port of Limenaria is the best place to walk around or hangout with friends and families at the taverns there. Fish dishes basically are very tasty here in these taverns and one can also try a lot of salads as well. At Limenas, we saw some exclusive tourist shops that sell some beautiful souvenir items. I bought a couple of them to gift to my friends and families. The items were a bit priced though but the rare artwork on both marble and wood made it worth buying.

We actually went to Thassos by motorcycle. The trip was great, Greece is the perfect country to ride a motorcycle, great views, gosd roads, civilised people. Also Thassoshas a great connection to the land by numerous ferries, but better make the ferry to Thassos leave from Kavala, it would be easier to make excursions in the area. Now it leaves from a small village called Keramoti about 20 km from Kavala.

Thassos is a nice island, but there are many nicer. The combination sea and green mountains is great, we actually liked the mountains better than the beaches. Don't miss the lake near Maris, the Theologos village, the beaches in the south part of the island (they are wilder). People should get rid of the wasps in the beaches, there were beaches you couldn't stay on because of them. They should also improve the roads in the mountains, the views are beautiful but mostly inaccessible (and we had an enduro motorcycle). There is no sign to the Maris waterfall, we couldn't find it.
