Polycrates and traded with neighboring Asiatic kingdoms. In the Medieval times, it was part of the Greek Byzantine Empire. After its fall, the Ottoman Turks ruled the island but many revolutionary attempts were made by the locals to free from the conquerors. Finally, Samos was integrated to Greece in 1912.
The major part of Samos island is covered with pine trees and vineyards, from which the famous Muscat wine is produced. The island has abundant natural beauty in form of picturesque mountainous spots, beautiful flora and crystalline sea, which entice people to come here and spend some of their most memorable holidays. In fact, it is mostly known as a calm family destination.
The coastline of Samos island is dotted with small pretty coves with trees that reach till the sandline. Kokkari, Tsamadou, Lemonakia, Potokaki and Kerveli are among the loveliest beaches, while Pythagorio, Heraion and Karlovassi are the most popular tourist resorts. However, the inland of Samos is also great. Picturesque villages are perched in the mountains, surrounded by lush greenery.
