Madamados village Lesvos: Madamados is a traditional village located on the northeast of Lesvos, 36 km northwest of Mytilene. It is known for its pottery craft as well as its livestock production, honey and virgin olive oil. The village has a historic descent. According to the researchers, Madamados was built during the post-Byzantine times. The village is popular for its traditional architecture, the quaint narrow streets and the cobbled roads.
Agriculture has been greatly developed in the broader area of Madamados and today there are nine workshops of pottery still active and several laboratories for the production of excellent quality cheese-making products. The village is considered the religious center of the island, famous for the Monastery of Taxiarches where an icon of Archangel Michael has been found. According to the tradition, this icon is made of mud and blood of monks slaughtered during the Turkish occupation. |
