Another church is of Virgin Kakkaviotissa, which is believed to be the remnant of one of the many monasteries that were located on the island during 1305. Precariously perched in a difficult to reach cave, the church is located on top of a hill, where during Byzantine times an Early Christian church was located, inhabited by hermits.
There is a beautiful service in the chapel on the first Tuesday after Easter, during which the icon of the Virgin Kakaviotissa is brought to the church from Kontia, where a family holds it during the rest of the year. The family is said to be the descendants of the laborer to whom the last monk who lived in the chapel, gave the icon. The 26th of July is also Agia Paraskevi’s celebration day feast and is celebrated with great enthusiasm by all the locals. Apart from these attractions, the village has a few bars and a tavern, as well as several shops selling local products.
