Ikaria Villages: Agia Irini Village in Ikaria |
Agia Irini Village Ikaria: Agia Irini Village is located in the Northern area of the island of Ikaria, west of Evdilos port town. This picturesque village was built on a plain with a quantity of water -called “kampos” in Greek- with plenty of moss, thickets, and reeds.
River Voutsidis flows down to the sea coastline, with charming beaches and well preserved houses all over the valley. It has also a nice square, with some traditional cafés around it for the visitors to take a rest. Agia Irini village owes its name to a church built on this hilltop. This church (Saint Irene) was built between the 11th and the 12th centuries, and it is the oldest church on Ikaria. There used to be a basilica dating to the 4th century, on the remnants of which Agia Irini church was built. |
