The Metropolitan hotel will display the flavors of Chios next week, as an array of dishes are put on display at the table, led by the mastic, the island’s shining star. Known as Chiot Nights, the event includes two exquisite culinary evenings, set for January 28th and 29th at the Corfu Hall of the hotel. The aromatic resin of the mastic tree has always been popularly known as a spice, though now its medicinal benefits are also becoming evident. It has been discovered that when the resin is used in small doses, it helps cure stomach ulcers. It is also used in dental care products as well as cosmetics. This variety of resin grows only on the southern part of the island. The resin is also used to make liqueur and mastic flavored ouzo.
The two day event will feature a special menu which will consist of everything from starters, main courses as well as desserts. Some of the dishes on the menu will be octopus, grilled sardines, meatball with homemade pasta, mastic flavored crème brule, Chiot meatballs, lamb fricassee and walnut pie with mastic ice cream. Adding to the menu will be the exceptional wine from Mesa village. The evening will be accentuated by a band and a folk dancing troupe of the same village. To complete the ambience, several mastic products selected by Chios Mastiha Growers Association as well as spirits of Tetteris Distillers will be on display.
