In Ancient Times, the island of Chios was called Strongili which means "circular" in Greek. Around 1500 BC, the volcano exploded and the center of the island sank. Today, the villages are perched on the edge of impressive cliffs and offer a panoramic view over the submerged volcano.

The medieval villages of Chios are one of the main reasons

They are architectural marvels nestled on the top or slopes
of mountains. There well-preserved traditional houses
