Kataraktis village Chios: On the southeastern coast of the island, in a distance of 12km from Chios Town, there is the seaside village of Kataraktis (whose name means "waterfall" in Greek). This is a very beautiful coastal settlement, combining the greenery of the mountain with the blue of the sea. Even though the houses are few and do not follow the famous Medieval architecture of Chios, still the village reveals a special beauty.
During the last years, Kataraktis has developed in tourism. There is a small port were all the fishing boats are moored. The surrounding region is covered with olive groves and mastic trees, the trademark of the island. The village has a population of about 450 inhabitants and due to the reduced mastic production many of the young locals are occupied with shipping and construction works in Chios Town. |
