Avgonyma village Chios: On a route to west, in a distance of 16km road (20 min from Chios), there is the picturesque village of Avgonyma. This lovely settlement is built on top of a hill. It is believed that it was founded in the 11th century. The surrounding area is covered with mastic trees and olive groves. The houses are built of stone and most of them are in ruins while others were restored by their owners.
Today, there are 85 people living in Avgonyma, most of whom work in the agriculture. Though the village does not have a significant monument, the traditional houses with great architecture, the charming cobbled roads and the taverns boast a romantic atmosphere to the village while preserving its medieval ambience. The amazing sunset, the view to the Aegean Sea and Psara, the Medieval observation post (tower) and the picturesque bay of Elinda are interesting attractions for tourists. |
