The Monastery of Nea Moni

This beautiful Byzantine monastery has been built in the middle of the 11th century and is dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin.

The Monastery of Agios Minas is famous because it is where 300 women and children who had found refuge in the monastery, were slaughtered by the Turks as a reprisal to the revolutionary attack leaded by Lykourgos Logothetis, during the Massacre of Chios on the 30th of March 1822.

The Mausoleum of the monastery displays the bones of the victims of the Massacre.

The Monastery of Panagia Mersinidiou
When the monastery passed to the Orthodox monks in 1660, the church took the name of Zoodohou Pigi (Source of Life).

The monastery became very active in the sector of religious paintings in the beginning of the 20th century and the icons on display are some fine examples of the local technique.

It is the most significant monument of Chios and one of the finest Byzantine buildings.

It is located 15 kilometres west of Chios Town, in the area of Karies.

The catholicon of the monastery is of octagonal type and decorated with superb marble revetments and mosaics, excellent examples of the Byzantine art.

On the west side, the refectory, a chapel, a bastion and an underground cistern has survived as well as some cells and ruins of buildings dating from the 18th and 19th centuries.

The Monastery of Agios Minas

The monastery was built between 1572 and 1595 by the Reverend Neofitos Koumanos and its son, Reverend Minas.

It is standing on the top of a hill, outside the village of Neohori.

This monastery is located 4 kilometres north of the village of Vrontados (or Vrondados), north of Chios Town.

It was founded during the late 19th century and its catholicon was built between 1897 and 1900.

It houses the holy vestments of the patriarch George the Fifth.

The Monastery of Kournas

This monastery was built by Dominicans monks between 1346 and 1566, during the occupation of the Franks.

It is situated outside the village of Karyes, north-west of Chios Town.

A beautiful church, some monk cells and annexed buildings form the monastery. Superb sculpted décor within the interior staircase pilasters can be admired in the monks’ quarters.

The inscriptions on the doorframes of the main church are significant and similar to those of Nea Moni.

Chios: Agios Georgios Church 01

In 1688, it was given to the monk Jeremiah who constructed the Temple and the quarters.

After its death in 1868, the buildings were converted into the largest monastic centre of Chios.

From 1900 until about 1960, one of the main activities of this cloister was religious painting.

Four monks are today living in this Cloister and the entrance is forbidden to women after sunset.
