General information

Mavros Gialos Beach (Mavra Volia) Chios: On the southwestern coast of Chios lies the beach of Mavros Gialos (or Mavra Volia, as it is called), in a distance of 28km west of Chios Town. Its name means black beach due to the black pebbles and sand that were debouched there from the volcano that is now extinct.

Thanks to this unique feature, Mavros Gialos has gained good reputation. It has an incomparable natural beauty with blue crystalline waters that are quite chilly, even in the middle of the summer. It is surrounded by rocky hills with low vegetation and greenery. The area distinguishes for the natural landscape and the relaxing surrounding.

There are no tourist facilities like umbrellas and sundecks, but it remains a cosmopolitan beach visited by many tourists every year and a great sight in Chios. The beach stretches for many meters, so it rarely gets crowded.

    Gorgeous beach
A gorgeous beach!! Probably the best in Chios and surely among the top ten I've visited in Greece. No watersports or umbrellas in Mavros Gialos, but the wild landscape is very impressive. Some huge rocks surround the beach and the water is clean. You, the beach and the ocean in front! You need a car to go because buses run only till Pyrgi. Also do not miss the mastic cultivations in the area. A very special thing of Chios that you must definitely see.
