Tilos: Megalo Chorio Tilos

Tilos Villages: Megalo Chorio village in Tilos Megalo Chorio Village Tilos: Megalo Chorio is built in the inland of Tilos, on the northen side and has kept intact its traditional architecture. Its stone houses are built on the slopes of Agios Stefanos hill, under the ancient town and the Medieval Castle that stands on top of the rocky hill. As Megalo Chorio has only about 250 inhabitants, its size is small and not many facilities are found there.

The Medieval Castle of Megalo Chorio was built in the 15th century by the Knights of Saint John. Its location allowed it to control the parts of Eristos and Agios Antonios on Tilos as well as the port of the neighbouring island of Nisyros. The ruins of some buildings are found in the Castle and the remains of the church of Saint Taxiarches. Many other churches can also be found in Megalo Chorio, such as the church of Agia Triada and Panagia Theotokissa. In a distance of 2 km to the south of Megalo Chorio, there is the cave of Charkadio, where paleontological fossils have been found. Next to the cave, there is an open-theatre where cultural events are held in summer.
