In the past, there was another village, Mikro Horio, but now it is abandoned. Only a bar is found in this ghost village, whose inhabitants gradually moved to Livadia.
The beaches on Tilos island are not organized or frequented, except for Livadia which has some umbrellas, sun beds and taverns along the coast. Many beaches can be accessed on foot, while others are only in short distance to each other. A famous beach on Tilos island is Eristos, surrounded by impressive mountainsides. Agios Antonios and Plaka are also popular, on the way to the Monastery of Saint Panteleimon, the protector of the island.
From historical point of view, Tilos island holds an important role. In the centre of the island, in Charkadio Cave, the geologists found the fossils of animals and remains from the Neolithic times. These fossils are today hosted in the Paleontological Collection of Tilos and the Physiographic Museum of Vienna. |
