Simi Emporio Village
Emporios (Nimporios) Village Simi: The village of Nimborios or Emporios is located 3 km north west of Gialos. In the ancient times Nimborios used to be a commercial harbour, as it is indicated by its name which is taken from the word Emborio, meaning commerce.
In our days, it is one of the most picturesque fishing settlements in Simi with an attractive pebbled beach. This one is actually a strip of stones, but it is advisable for visiting because of its views across the bay.
Although there are no signs left from the commercial past of this settlement, tourists usually appreciate this small village. Nimborios has a few nice houses with the typical and picturesque red-tiled roof, and a tavern that opens in high season, with sun-beds, and regular water taxis. Unfortunately, there are no shops in the area, but it counts on summer apartments where you can spend some days.
The fact that it remains quite peaceful attracts many visitors who want to enjoy some time away from the crowds. It is worth visiting for its picturesque features, its lush greenery and splendid views. The area of Nimborios counts on interesting sites as well, such as the catacombs and Roman mosaics.
The Archaeological museum located nearby counts on some of the most important Byzantine and post-Byzantine monuments, in many cases belonging to the second half of the 6th century, along with Byzantine registers and early Christian capitals and pictures, which were taken from Nimborios.
One of the main attractions is the Monastery of Panagia Kyra, which is built at a height of 450 meters. It can be found on the way from Nimborios to Nikia, a picturesque village which main square has been awarded because of its elliptic shape. The monastery counts on a great view along the east part of the island.
The village of Nimborios is ideal for spending a relaxing day, and visiting its interesting sites. It has the necessary facilities for having a good time on its beach, and provides green scenery. It can be easily accessed on foot or by car from the town.
