There are several remote islands in the Aegean, one of them is the island of Simi. The problem, for each one of them, has always been living on their own economical resources, on their agriculture, their herds, their cattle, with not many possibilities to open their markets towards other remote areas.
Living on an island means living in harmony with the sea. It is here, in this group of Dodecanese islands, where sailing, fishing, sponge growth and recollection, and other related activities had their age of apogee, and then declined. There was nothing the locals could do to stop the massive exodus that was emptying some islands like Simi. Although the island resisted the warrior innovations for centuries, it almost got defeated by its own circumstances.
However, there is always something people can do to reorganise their economy. And that was, precisely, what the Simians did. They turned the place into a beautiful holiday destination, and it worked. |
