If you are staying at a hotel close to the harbour of Gialos, you will surely want to visit Nos Beach instead of spending your beach day close to the port, as Nos Beach is cleaner and more secluded than the one in the harbour area.
However, although Nos Beach is not crowded at all, it is not as secluded as Nimborios Beach. In consequence, if you like clean beaches and some company, Nos is the beach for you. Moreover, its particular location helps protect the beach from the winds and offer a comfortable temperature even in cool days.Nos is a popular sandy beach located in the area close to the harbour after the clock tower, so it is the closest beach to Gialos.
This beach offers a sandy and shingle coastline and it is also called “Town Beach”. The place is easy to reach on foot going past the clock tower after Emborios coastal road. Many tour agencies also call it “Paradise Beach” to attract tourism to this long narrow beach of pebbly sand. Visitors take advantage of the sun beds and spend a peaceful day on the beach, or have a drink in the tavern nearby.
Some others dare take the taxi boat to Nanou Beach to do some snorkelling and scuba diving. An interesting detail to be borne in mind is that the sun sets quite early, so the best hours for these sports are the morning hours, or early in the afternoon. One particularity of Nos is that a lot of people choose this location to be nude on the beach and in the water.
However, those who are a little shy don’t like that idea, as the main road is behind and a little above the beach, so this beach is not exactly a private place, especially in high season, as it is too visible from the public road to Nimborios Beach. Although it is mainly tourists who choose to be nude, the situation is well tolerated by the local residents, who also spend the day on the beach when their daily duties allow them some spare time. Climbing the cliffs at the end of Nos, apart from allowing for a stunning view, goes a long way in finding some more secluded spots that are not as easily seen unless from the water.
Nevertheless, some visitors don’t mind being visible to the general public and take the road to Nimborios up the hill for a five minute walk, and then take the two steps taking them down from the road to the waters and a little sandy beach. Taking this road also allows them to admire the incredibly blue waters, from the area among the high tamarisk trees. Tour agencies are trying to make Nos the official nudist beach and rename it Paradise Beach for tour purposes, but the authorities haven’t given their last word yet.
In conclusion, if you would like to take a relaxing holiday near the harbour but far away enough from it to enjoy clean waters and a golden sand beach, don’t hesitate to choose Nos Beach. You may also dare walk barefoot and naked along the pebbly strip of sand from the clock tower and on, to feel yourself completely free. |
