Hello! I am Andrea and I have spent my holidays in Rhodes during last August. I am from Italy and I have been several times to Greek islands and in mainland, too, in the last 20 years. I chose the plane to get to the island, it has short connections from Athens airport.
Rhodes town is very attractive as a historical site, monuments well conserved but: too much crowd in August, shops, hotels and restaurants are too expensive and generally not attractive to independent travellers. Lindos was the same as in Rhodes town.
However, I liked all country villages and all the beaches and nature of the part of the island west and northwest of Lindos. All the shores east of Lindos are perfect for swimming.
In the package tour areas, the hotels ans bars are expensive and serve poor international and Greek food. In the other parts of the island, food is excellent.
One thing that the authorities of Rhodes should take into account, is to stop building hotels, villas and touristic resorts but restore and maintain all the historical buildings and country villages. A great choice is to reserve your room independently in the historical centre of Rhodes town and of Lindos, rent a car and go around the island. There is a plenty of desert places and beaches and excellent wild nature!
