It
was the Roman Catholic cathedral of Rhodes and has, in
its inside, beautiful 14th century (Byzantine) and Frankish
frescoes and wall-paintings.
The interior of the church was completed by the Knights and is a superb example
of gothic architecture, all made of stone, with apses, alcoves and long, narrow
windows.
The Turks turned this church into a mosque called the Enterum Mosque.

This superb Gothic church stands in the medieval city of Rhodes, at the end of
a little street beginning near the house of Prince Djem.
This beautiful church has one single aisle and was built during the Knights rule.
| The monastery
of Filerimos |

This monastery is standing in the village of Filerimos (south of the City of
Rhodes) and dates from the rule of the Knights.
It is located in a verdant surrounding full of cypress and other trees.
The monks’ cells are each marked with a plaque decorated by a different
flower for each cell. Inside the monastery is the interesting Church of the Knights
which looks like a medieval castle with round domes.
Before the construction of the Church of the Knights, an Early Christian basilica
(5th-6th centuries) used to stand at the site of the actual monastery and had
three aisled ending in an apse.
The date of the destruction of this basilica
is unknown but only the remains of its baptistery have survived as well as its
floor decorated with a beautiful mosaic. |

The remains of a paved floor belonging to an older Phoenician temple
can be seen in front of one of the statue bases.

Church of Saint John of the Collachium |

Also
in the medieval part of the city of Rhodes stand the
remains of the church of Saint John of the Collachium
which was built during the early 14th century and is
dedicated to Saint John, patron of the Order.
It is a three-aisled church built according to the
Gothic architectural style (during the Knights rule)
and was used for the burial of Grand Masters.
A
colonnade used to link the church with the Palace
of the Grand Masters (just right of the street) but
was destroyed in 1856, along with a large part of
the church, with the explosion of a gunpowder magazine
that was stored in the basement of the bell-tower
of the church and which was struck by lightning.

This Byzantine church can be found in the colourful street of Agiou Fanouriou,
in the Old City of Rhodes.
The church was built during the 13th century.
It has been built in a shape of a cross and is decorated with wonderful frescoes.

Chapel of Saint George Hostos |

This underground chapel is standing
near the ancient temple of Athena in the village of Filerimos,
and was built during the early Byzantine times.
Its walls
are embellished with superb 14th-15th centuries frescoes
supposed to be put there by the Knights of Saint John
(explaining the strong Western influences).
Opposite
the entrance is a painting of Christ flanked by the Apostles
Peter and Paul and by other saints.
The arch of this
lovely Byzantine church is decorated with paintings of
the Blessed Virgin and the Passion of Christ. |

It
was built in 1925 by the Italians, following the architectural
design of the old gothic Church of Saint John (which
is located in the Old City of Rhodes) and was also dedicated
to the patron of the Order (Saint John).
It is the actual cathedral of Rhodes and attracts many visitors who come to admire
its impressive architecture and its medieval style.

This fine church is located in the heart of the lovely village of Lindos, on
its main square.
It is a cross-shaped 14th century church which has an octagonal dome, whitewashed
walls and tiled roof.
Device of the Grand Master D’Aubusson can be seen
on the western door of the church as well as an inscription
bearing the dates 1489/90, dates of the additions made
to the building.
Inside the church visitor can admire a superb floor made
of black and white pebbles as well as the magnificent
18th century frescoes which are embellishing the church’s
walls and are a work of the artist Grigoris (from Symi).
