Rare calmness in the air

Patmos is an island so strongly related to religion, you can actually feel it in every air breathe in Chora. But that is only in Chora with the big monastery impressively above your head. Everywhere else there is summer: sparkling beaches, few trees for shade, strong sun and inviting beach chairs. Patmos has a rare calmness in the air.

I spend a delightful week in Skala, an area that gets pretty crowded due to the many cruise ships that dock there over the last years. The first thing to do in Patmos is to visit the famous monastery of Agios Ioannis. The view is just amazing since the monastery was built at the top of a mountain and is surrounded by strong Medieval fortress walls.

The island is really small so it won't be hard to travel anywhere around. The island also distinguishes for the pristine beaches where a swim in the crystalline waters can be almost therapeutic. There are no clubs on the island, although it would be a nice idea to lie on the beach with a drink and good food. Only few cafeterias in Skala that stay till midnight and even fewer in Chora.

Dear Theo,
thank you for 14 wonderful days in your hotel near the beach of Grikos and Petra. Your hotel is right for family-holidays. We're very happy for the daily room-service with fresh towels. Greetings from germany from the (little!) family with 6 children.

We stayed in July and had a brilliant time. The family who owned studios were so kind. The rooms are very tasteful and greek in style and we were treated to cake and homemade jam. The owner Yacomena went out of her way to make us feel welcome. She even met us at the ferry when we left something behind. Incredible service. In fact after we left, no place matched Patmos and these apartments for a really authentic greek stay. We are still sad now from leaving Greece. Lovely people. Best wishes, health and happiness to all of you.

Philippa and I spent a great three weeks in A1 studio in June this year 2011. The views are superb. The hosts Giacoumina and her husband are the best we have ever had. All the rooms have been designed and built by Giacoumina's husband. They are very Greek in style, comfortable and with all you need for your holiday stay. Smashing!! If you are reading this and want a quiet and relaxing holiday then contact the Mathios web site asap.
We have been to many Greek Islands but somehow Patmos always draws us back. Now we have two reasons to visit the Island again.
Thank you Giacoumina.
With best wishes from England.
Philippa and Tony.

We started our holiday in Mathios studios on Pathmos in july 2011. It's a wonderful place to be. The studio is very nice with a stunning sea view and natural airco. It's like you live in a small house for a while. The atmosphere is great, very peaceful. Yiakoumina is a very nice host. We were islandhopping for some weeks and we were lucky with our accomadations this year, but Mathios studios was the best. Thank you Yiakoumina!!

Category: Patmos Hotels > Asteri

I stayed at Hotel Asteri in May several years ago. My wife and I were here for several days. She got sick and dehydrated and had to spend some time in the hospital on Patmos.

The family that owns the hotel went out of their way to take very good care of us, cooking for my wife, and even giving us an extra night free on the end of our trip. I was a guy in social services back then, now I'm a guy who works as a travel agent. I look at hotels every day, and I would highly recommend this hotel.

Hotel Asteri is a few minute walk from the main town, which is perfect. You avoid any traffic from cruise ships. It looks out onto a bay on the back side of the island. This hotel is exactly like the island. Quaint and beautiful. It is a B&B type place. Not a 4 star luxory resort, but very Greek and also comfortable.

Patmos has a unique energy. As far as I've seen, it is not a big island but it is well known for its religious history. So, whether you are interested in religion or not, a thing you must see once you visit Patmos is the Monastery of Saint John. It is made like a fortress and inside the monastery, you can visit the Byzantine church, see the treasury and the museum. We visited the Cave of Apocalypse where Saint John had his vision. It is located between Chora and Skala. The Cave is surrounded by a monastery, which stands out with its white colour. The Cave is at the lowest level of the monastery so we had to go down many steps in order to reach the Cave. We were not allowed to take photographs of the Cave. Apart from visiting these holy places, you will not find many things to do there. You can make daytrips to the islands of Arki and Marathi or it might be a good idea as well to rent a car and explore the island. The beaches of Patmos are all great. We went to Agriolivado, Skala beach and there is this sandy beach called Grikos that looks like a lake. Still, there is a nudist beach and I guess several small bays where you can be alone. The island has plenty of bars, cafeterias and restaurants where you can enjoy good food in combination with the relaxing atmosphere. In Patmos you can also buy handmade things and souvenirs for your people, many gift shops at the port.
