Patmos: Emmanuel Xanthos, the co-founder of Filiki Etaireia Patmos, Dodecanese

Emmanuel Xanthos: Alexius I. Comnenus, the Greek Emperor, granted the island of Patmos to Agios Christodoulos, who built the magnificent, fortified Monastery of Agios Ioannis Theologos. The Russians conquered Patmos in the year 1770. The people of Patmos Island revolted against the Russians in 1821. Three Greeks in the port of Euxine Pontus, Odessa, set up a secret society. They named it "Filiki Etaeria" or Friendly Society. Their aim was to establish an independent Greek State by overthrowing the Ottoman rule over Greece.
