Patmos Festivals, Greece: Information about the Festivals of Patmos, Dodecanese

 

 

Here are some of the religious and non-religious events and festivals which are taking place on the island of Patmos.

On the 6th of August, the inhabitants of Patmos celebrate the Feast of the Saviour, at the church and the village of Kambos with a religious ceremony followed by dances, dancing and food.

Same thing happens on the 15th of August for the celebration of the Feast of the Virgin Mary.

 
Dances, music, food and wine are available at the great feast before the celebration of the Cross. The religious ceremony takes place at the church in the village of Grikos and is followed by another feast where local instruments are played and free drinks are served.

On the 15th of March, a ceremony is held in the church of Chora (capital of the island) in honour of the Feast of Agios Christodoulos, founder of the famous Monastery of Saint John the Theologian.
 
On Good Friday, the Recreation of the Deposition of the Christ from the Cross is held at the Monastery of Saint John the Theologian, in Chora.

On Monday after Easter, the Celebration on the Second day of Easter is held in Skala, during which the Municipality distributes free food to all the visitors. On the 8th of May a religious ceremony is held in the Monastery of Saint John the Theologian, in Chora, in honour of the saint.

 


Patmos Festivals: Information about the festivals in the island of Patmos Greece

A series of Cultural Events are organised by the Municipality of Patmos during the summer period, in the town of Skala. Those events include musical and dancing performances on the main square of Skala.
On the 13th of September, at the village of Diakofti, the Feast of the Holy Cross is celebrated.
 


On Good Thursday, the Ceremony of the Sink is taking place in Chora. It consists in a recreation of the Last Supper; twelve monks of the monastery represent the Epistles and the Archbishop washes their feet. This takes place on the square of the Town Hall.
 


Eight weeks after Easter, the Feast of Agioi Pandes (All Saints) is held near the village of Kambos, in the Monastery of Apolou.

All the families of the island go there by boat, early in the morning, bringing food and wine for the big celebration following the religious ceremony.
