For many years, Patmos was a place of pilgrimage for Catholics and Orthodox because it where Saint John the Divine wrote the Book of Revelation (the Apocalypse). Because of this strong religious past, Patmos has been only recently open to tourism. Patmos has various very attractive and picturesque villages, offering their traditional atmosphere and beautiful architecture to the amazed eye of the visitor. The capital of the island, Patmos Town (or Chora) is particularly beautiful. It was built around the impressive Monastery of Saint John and is full of whitewashed houses, 17th century traditional mansions, narrow stone-paved alleys and snow-white chapels.

The eastern coast of the island of Patmos has various secluded coves and peaceful beaches offering their golden sand or smooth pebbles and their crystalline waters to the pleasure of the visitors. Some very well organised beaches are also available, proposing all kinds of facilities and rentals. The western coast is very rocky and mostly inaccessible.

Night life in Patmos is very low key. This is due to the presence of the Monastery of Saint John and to the intense religious past of the island. However, a few bars and dancing places are available in Chora (or Patmos Town), capital of the island, in Skala, main harbour of the island, and in the resort of Kambos.
