It is located in the
north-western part of the archipelago, between
the islands of Patmos and Kalymnos.
Leros is open to tourism only from a few years
because it used to be the principal naval base
for Italians and Germans, as well as a prison
for political dissidents during the Greek

(the dictatorship of Metaxas).
Housing a
mental hospital for the most intractable psychiatric
cases, an asylum for mentally handicapped children
and a military base, holidays in Leros is not the
standard type for Greek islands.
But the island
has some lovely beaches and secluded coves as well
as a gentle countryside, impressive bays and a very
attractive capital. |
