The Paleokastro in Xilokambos: Xirokambos is an old seaside village and a small settlement. The oldest castle in the history of Leros is the castle of Lepida (Paleokastro) found above Xirokambos. Paliokastro or Kastro ton Lepidon, as it is also known, lies at the far end of the village and at the top of a hill, 70 meters above the ground. Older than the Kastro tis Panagias in Agia Marina, this castle is built on the ruins of an ancient acropolis, dating from 2,500 B.C. Inside the Paleokastro, the church of Panagia, which was built in the 4th Century AD, used to stand. |
