Kos Geography, Greece: Information about the geography of Kos, Dodecanese

The island of Kos is the third largest island of the Dodecanese archipelago, after the islands of Rhodes and Karpathos.

It is lying south of Kalymnos and north of Nisyros. It is very close to the coast of Asia Minor, modern Turkey, and about 200 nautical miles from Piraeus.

Kos has a total area of 290 square kilometres, a coastline of 112 kilometres and a population of about 25,000 inhabitants.
The island is mostly flat and has two low mountains. The highest is Mount Dikaion, rising at an altitude of 875 metres, and the other is Mount Simpatro, which runs along the southern coast of Kos.

The capital and main harbour of Kos, Kos Town, is located on a verdant district. The town is overlooking a natural harbour (on an open bay), on the north-eastern part of the island.

The coastline is full of golden beaches and many islets are found opposite the coasts, such as Kastri islet opposite Kefalos beach.
The mainland of Kos is verdant and incredibly fertile, blessed with rich soil and abundant ground water.
