History has it that Kos island has been inhabited since the prehistoric times. In the course of history, it was dominated by many civilizations, from the Minoans and the Athenians till the Venetians and the Turks in the medieval times.

The long history of Kos island is depicted in the many archaeological sites on the island, including the Ancient Agora, Casa Romana, the Castle of Antimachia, Neratzia Castle right above the port of Kos Town and certainly the Asklepieion, the most important healing centre in the ancient times. In fact, tradition says that Hippocrates, the father of medicine, used to heal people in this Asklepieion, one of the many that existed in Greece.

Kos Island 02The capital is Kos Town, located on the northern side of the island, which is served with some of the finest bars and restaurants that play music till dawn. The architectural style of the buildings here is a blend of medieval, Neoclassical and modern elements. The Old Town has many mosques from the Ottoman period and the central square of the Old Town distinguishes for a large plane tree, known as the plane tree of Hippocrates. Tradition says that under this tree, the Hippocrates used to teach the secrets of medicine to his students.

A nice place to visit in Kos island is Zia, a mountainous village with green environment, spring waters everywhere and traditional houses. Another beautiful village is also Antimachia. Standing on a plateau almost in the center of the island, this village offers picturesque corners, a few windmills, and an interesting folklore museum. The Venetian Castle, on a hill above the village, provides splendid island views.

Kos Island 03Apart from villages, Kos island is mostly famous for its exquisite beaches. The good thing is that due to its large size, Kos island provides both crowded and secluded beaches. Mastihari is a perfect beach for windsurfing, Kardamena is famous for its nightlife and the beach bars, Kefalos and Paradise have excellent water and Thermes has hot water and black pebbles on the shore. Many other beaches dot the coastline and if you go off the track, you will also find small coves to enjoy some privacy.
