    Lefkos Karpathos
After promising a friend that we would visit Karpathos and have a drink there on his behalf, Linda and I did in June 2008. It was a long journey from Wales but one that was so worthwhile. Not the prettiest island but by far the friendliest and most relaxing of the many we have visited. Lefkos is very pretty with some lovely sandy bays and wonderfull tavernas, the best in our opinion is the Central Taverna run by Spiros who is also the owner, the food is superb and all cooked by his sister Sofia and very well priced. Nothing is too much trouble. Lefkos is a great walking base and the walk to Mesochori is well worth the effort, meet the local islanders they are fantastic, and a visit to Maria's Taverna in Finiki is a must as is a drive to Olympos and Diafani. Pigadia and Amopi must be visited, we thought Apella beach was a bit of a let down, also visit the villages of Menetes and Orthos, in fact see as much as you can of an island that seems to become part of you and you feel you do not want to leave it!

    Wonderful Lefkos
On Karpathos, we spent most of our time in Lefkos. The attraction of this island for us was that there are no major "attractions". Just mountains, beaches, and authentic villages and people. We loved walking and running on the trails, lying on the beach and looking at beautiful scenery while really relaxing. We spent one day in Amopi and although it was beautiful (the beaches were gorgeous), it felt much more impersonal, touristy, and it didn't have the same comfrotable and friendly small town feeling that Lefkos had.

The local food was excellent and inexpensive and the service was friendly and personal. We loved the yogurt and honey everywhere - so delicious! We got to have interesting conversations with the owners of most of the places we ate at and that was a great way to learn about life on Karpathos. In Lefkos, we liked the restaurants 3 Dolphins, Central and Blue Swan.

The only thing that bothered me on Karpathos was the stray animals. You really need to do something about neglected animals. Twice, I encountered dogs chained up in the middle of nowhere. Someone told me they were probably hunting dogs and were being fed and cared for, but it looked like a horrible and terribly inhumane existence to me. Greece needs a serious spaying, neutering and adoption program for dogs and cats.
