Karpathos Festivals, Greece: Information about the Festivals of Karpathos, Dodecanese

 

 

The Festival of Evangelismos, or Assumption Day
This is the most important feast of the island and is taking place at Pigadia, the capital of Karpathos. It is celebrated with dancing, drinking and eating.
 
The Feast of Agia Sofia
This religious feast is taking place on the 17th of September, in the village of Finiki.

It begins with a religious ceremony, followed by a great celebration.
 
Feast of the Virgin Mary (Panagia)
This important religious festivity is celebrated all around the island, on the 15th of August with particular interest for those who tcelebrate it at the picturesque village of Olymbos.

 


The Omonia Festival
During the month of August, the Cultural Society “Omonia” organises various cultural events with local singing and dancing. This takes place in the mountainous village of Aperi, a few kilometres north-west of Pigadia.

Shrove Monday
This event is taking place on Shrove Monday, in the town of Pigadia and consists in a “theatrical” performance: a popular court is held, where righteous people judge the bad deeds of the inhabitants.

Men make insulting gestures to other man dressed as women and the “bad men” are taken to court by the “jafiedes”.
 

The Feast of Agios Georgios
This feast is taking place at the village of Spoa, on the 3rd of November. All the people named George are celebrating. This day is also the day when the wine of Karpathos is open.
This is why Saint George is also called “methystis”, meaning “he who makes the people drunk”. On this day, locals are also celebrating the opening day of the season.
Feast of Panagia Messohoritissa
This religious feast is celebrated on the 8th of September, at the village of Mesohori.
A religious ceremony is held and, in a room near the church, people are gathering to eat meat and rice.
 

There, the fest is held according to the traditional way, with old customs and the inhabitants wear their local costumes and dance local traditional dances, at the sound of traditional instruments.

Feast of Agios Pandeleimon
This feast is the most important event taking place at the village of Othos.

People from all over the island are coming here to eat and drink together, under the sound of traditional music.

After dinner, they go to church to kiss the icon of Saint Pandeleimon and offer their donations. The feast last for three days of dancing, drinking and fun.
