Acropolis of Arkassa

Location: Arkassa

The Acropolis of Arkasa: The village of Arkasa on the west coast of Karpathos, 23 km from Pigadia sits against the waves of the Karpathian Sea presenting beautiful views across Kassos Island. Karpathos was occupied by the Mycenaeans during the 14th century BC, who built an acropolis with Cyclopean walls on the rocky headland. This citadel is known as the Paleokastro or the Mycenaean acropolis.

The acropolis had been inhabited since prehistoric times and people lived in it until the late Byzantine period. The ancient acropolis can still be seen to be occupying the prominent peninsula projecting out of the sea.
