Kalymnos Festivals, Greece: Information about the Festivals of Kalymnos, Dodecanese

 

 

Kalymnos, like every Greek island and region, celebrates many religious feasts and national ones.
Here are some of the most important celebration and festivals that are taking place on the island.

January
New Year’s Day is celebrated by cutting a special cake containing a lucky coin; great dinners and dances all over the island follow this. On the 6th of January, the Epiphany Day (Baptism of Christ) is celebrated on the harbour of Pothia where priests bless the waters and throw in the Cross;

 
Good Friday
The celebration of Christ’s funeral also varies according to Easter.
A solemn procession is held along the waterfront of Pothia, representing the funeral of Christ; priests and young boys are carrying the icon of Christ, which is decorated with red and white gardenias.

Big Saturday
This is the day following Good Friday, celebrating the resurrection of Christ. Church services are taking place all day long and, at midnight, all the inhabitants gathered in the main church to receive the “holy light”,
 
7th of March
A big celebration and a parade along the harbour of Pothia are organised to celebrate the Anniversary of the Independence of the Dodecanese. Girls are wearing traditional dresses representing each of the islands forming the group call “Dodecanese”.

Spring Festival
Starting on the 1st of May, the Spring Festival celebrates the arriving of spring.
Everyone hang fresh flowers in their houses and outdoor dinners are organised all around the island.

Clean Monday
The celebration of this day (which is the starting of the Orthodox lent) varies according to Easter date.

People are flying kites and going to the taverns to eat seafood, unleavened bread and fresh fish.

Easter Sunday
This is the biggest and more important celebration of Greece.

Huge dinners are organised in all the villages of the island and people eat roasted lamb and goat.


 

24th of June
On this day locals are celebrating the feast of Saint John. At dusk, small bonfires are lit on the beaches and the harbours of the island and some people are jumping over them.

26th of July
This day is the eve of the feast day of Saint Panteleimon. A big ceremony followed by a celebration is held at the monastery dedicated to the healing saint.

15th of August
This is the feast day of the Virgin Mary, which is celebrated all around Greece. In Kalymnos, church services are taking place, followed and preceded by dances, dinners and music, which are of particular liveliness in the villages of Arginonda and on the islet of Telendos.

Open-air Concerts
Free open-air concerts are taking place on the harbour of Pothia, on Sundays evening, during summer. Sometimes famous Greek artists are performing.
