Kalymnos, like every Greek island
and region, celebrates many religious feasts and national
ones.
Here are some of the most important celebration and
festivals that are taking place on the island.
January
New Year’s Day is celebrated by cutting a special
cake containing a lucky coin; great dinners and dances
all over the island follow this. On the 6th of January,
the Epiphany Day (Baptism of Christ) is celebrated
on the harbour of Pothia where priests bless the waters
and throw in the Cross;

The celebration of Christ’s funeral also varies according
to Easter.
A solemn procession is held along the waterfront of Pothia,
representing the funeral of Christ; priests and young
boys are carrying the icon of Christ, which is decorated
with red and white gardenias.
Big Saturday
This is the day following Good Friday, celebrating the
resurrection of Christ. Church services are taking place
all day long and, at midnight, all the inhabitants gathered
in the main church to receive the “holy light”, |
