Halki Castle: The Medieval Castle of Halki Greece, Dodecanese

Halki Medieval CastleThe Medieval Castle of Halki Dodecanese: On top of an abrupt and rocky hill above Chorio village, the old capital of Halki, there stands a strong Castle surrounded by high walls. This Castle was built in the 14th century, on the site of a previous acropolis, by the Knights of Saint John, who had conquered all the Dodecanese islands that time. In order to protect the island and its inhabitants from pirates and enemies, they cosntructed this impressive Castle on a hill that was difficult to access.

A paved path leads to the Castle and the view from up there is fascinating. The back side of the hill is rough and its slopes lead to the sea. At the foot of the Castle, there are three small chapels dedicated to Virgin Mary, to Saint Nicolas and to the Holy Trinity.
