Halki Architecture: Information about the architecture of Halki Greece, Dodecanese

Halki, like most Greek Islands, has a distinct style of architecture that is characteristic of its kind.

The horseshoe shaped harbor forms a perfect backdrop to those neo-classical style houses. Like most of Greece, the entire island is full of beautiful churches like the Agios Nikolaos church that has the largest bell tower in Dodecanese.
The island has had a powerful and wealthy history and it is this status that is reflected in its beautiful houses and buildings.

The houses have large Venetian style windows that have been influenced by the architecture of the sponge fishermen. The stone mansions are built in many tiers like an amphitheatre with a medieval castle also occupying the site of the ancient Acropolis.
There are many towers and churches, including the 9th century Church of Panagia, one of the oldest churches on the island.

There are a number of stone unfinished houses that seem like ruins but aren't. They are simply the homes of people who moved midway through their lives in search of greener work pastures.
