Dodecanese Churches

Dodecanese churches

Information about the Churches in Dodecanese islands, in Greece but also information about churches and monasteries in many islands of the group: At the most famous islands of Dodecanese like Rhodes, Kos, Leros and Kalymnos, Italians left significant architectural samples through their long drawn presence, most of which survive to this day whereas others are on continuous decay. These are Venetian castles, elegant mansions and other renovated houses.

The Byzantine period though, during the late 3rd century enriched the islands of Dodecanese with marvellous samples of ecclesiastical architecture. These archaeological monuments charm every visitor and reflect a part of their glorious past. The most important religious site is found in Patmos, the Monastery of Agios Ioannis the Theologian. Even in smaller inhabited islands there are dozens of churches and medieval castles dating from the Byzantine times, in different states of preservation.
