The villages of Astypalea are small and scattered along the seaside and the countryside of the island.
Its few inhabitants deal mostly with agriculture and fishing, while in summer they also own some tourist gift shops, cafeterias or rooms to rent. The capital and main port of the island is Chora, famous for its Venetian Castle and picturesque windmills.

Some of them are completely isolate and can be accessed only by boat, while others are more easy to reach and have some tourist amenities. Generally, the beaches of Astypalea are calm and quiet, as only few of them are organized.

The Castle of Astypalea, which stands on a hill overlooking Chora, was built by John de Querini, a Venetian nobleman, in the 14th century. This Castle used to protect the island and its population from the enemies and the pirates that were looting the
Aegean islands that time. Today it stands as the trademark of Astypalea and reminds of the long history of this tiny island.
