Isn't it great to have your holidays in the most peaceful place ever? I love the Greek islands, they are so close to home and everyone has a unique beauty. But I am sad that some islands try to follow the example of Mykonos and want to get money from clubbing or other bad sides of tourism.
For me, vacations are about relaxing. Sleeping on the soft sand, under the shade of a tree and with the sounds of the middle-summer insects in your ears. This is Greece for me!! Nature and beaches and good people. Unfortunately, I find all these in small islands and more remote towns in the mainland any more.
Astypalea was such a place and, trust me, I have the best memories from there. We stayed in a room in Pera Gialos. I remember it was hard to book rooms from the Internet and had to make a few phone calls, but a few hotel owners spoke English. We did most of our swimmings there and in the evenings we would go to Chora to have dinner in a small tavern right under the Castle. If it is not windy, a small boat leaves from the port and makes the tour of the island. Take it, if you don't swim in the beaches, at least you wil see some wild landscape.
