Syros Geography

Syros is located in the center of the Cyclades. Due to its rich history and cultural past, it serves as the administrative capital of the island complex. It is the most populated island of the Cyclades with approximately 20,000 inhabitants and an area of 84 sq km. The capital of the island is Ermoupolis, which is also the capital of the entire Cyclades.

The island's population is mostly gathered in the capital and in Ano Syros, but there are settlements scattered all over the island. The highest peak of Syros is Pyrgos, with an altitude of 442 meters. From the hillsides of Ano Syros, the neighboring islands of Tinos, Mykonos, and Delos can be seen.

The northern part of Syros is mountainous and with a few inhabitants. The interesting aspect of this region is that it is part of the Natura 2000 protected areas. It has a different morphology from the rest of the island; more specifically, it has limestone rocks, while the other regions mainly feature volcanic rocks. The area of Aerolithos is typical of the rare geological wealth of northern Syros.

A great number of capes and bays of marvelous natural beauty are part of the geography of Syros, too. In addition, many rocky islets surround the island, such as Didimi and Stroggylo.
