In a walking distance from the centre of Ermoupolis, up the hill, there is the picturesque quarter of Ano Syros. With a square offering great view to the port and the hill, Ano Syros was the homeland of Markos Vamvakaris, a famous Greek rebetiko musician. In fact, there is a museum of Vamvakaris close to the square of Ano Syros.
 Syros island has both popular beaches and secluded coves. Galissas, Finikas, Posidonia and Azolimnos are some of the most frequented beaches in Syros island, with lots of accommodation, tourist facilities, fish taverns and beach bars. There are also many less frequented spots, like Kini or Vari, more family-oriented. The beaches of Syros island have sandy or pebbled coasts and clean water.
The southern side gets more popular in summer, while the northern side provides many private coves to relax. This northern side of Syros island also has a couple of traditional villages and beautiful natural landscape. |
