Sikinos: Chora Sikinos

Sikinos Villages: Chora village in Sikinos Chora Village Sikinos: Kastro or Chora, the new village of Sikinos, is the capital of the island. It is located about 4 km to the north of the port. The right side of Kastro is more developed with commercial activities. There are a number of small markets and a few traditional taverns that serve the good quality local foods. There is also a ferry ticket office that arranges the travel plans of the people in the island. The Monastery of Zoodochos Pighi, an eighteenth-century church with a fortified castle is an important architectural

construction in Chora. The castle protected the islanders from enemy attacks. Whenever there was an attack, the islanders used to pour boiling oil on the enemy from within the castle. The walls from where the oil came out can be still seen on the castle. Chora is a place with few tourism developments. Nevertheless, it attracts many tourists because of its unexploited natural beauty. Chora does not have a fertile land. Most of the villagers are involved in maritime activities to make their living. The only exception is some olive trees, fig trees and grape vines. Wine production is a traditional practice that is still continued in Chora. Transport facilities in Chora are limited to boats and a few buses. Until recently, mules and donkeys were used as main modes of transport within the island. The villagers lead a traditional life, preserving their customs and festivities. They are friendly to the outsiders.
