Lying to the southwest of Chora, the ancient remains of Episkopi arouse much archeological interest. There is a theory that the rectangular church, with two marble columns to the left and right of the entrance, was actually the site of the ancient temple of Pythian Apollo dating back to the 3rd century B.C. which was converted into a Roman mausoleum, and then into the church of the Dormition of the Virgin in the 5th century A.D. Certain parts of the ancient temple have been in fact used for the construction of the church.
