About the architecture of Sikinos, Greece

Sikinos is one of the most peaceful and less known Cycladic islands located between Ios and Folegandros. Sikinos architecture has characteristics from the Byzantine and Venetian period that match perfectly with the typical Greek style. The present capital of Sikinos, Chora, is separated in two quarters which highlight the splendour of Cycladic architecture, Kastro and Chorio.

Kastro is an old fortified settlement, actually the oldest in Sikinos, built in the 15th century, literally at the edge of the steep cliff. Strolling through the historical settlement you will discover many mansions, the famous Pantanassa church as well as beautiful wall frescoes. Chorio, on the other hand is more traditional, with narrow streets, old houses, ascending and descending paths, lovely crossings and flourishing gardens. Anyone who visits this part of the capital will be fascinated by the peace and tranquility.

Apart from the picturesque whitewashed houses with the blue windows and doors that preserve the island's unique character, Sikinos was also the place were the Byzantines established their base leaving six Byzantine temples with beautiful frescoes from the 13th and the 14th century, while countless churches still stand around the Venetian castle.

However, the most impressive monument in Sikinos Greece is the Christian temple of Episkopi, a monument of great historical, archaeological and architectural significance. Remains of ancient settlement are also found in Paleokastro and Agia Marina.

Visitors can enjoy their stay in many of the traditional hotels that have respected the traditional Cycladic architecture.
